Roman Army School 2012.
The Roman Army School in 2012 will be held at Collingwood College, Durham instead of St. Aidans College due to accommodation changes during the holidays.
The Roman Army School will run from Saturday 31st March to Wednesday 4th April 2012.
This is the 37th residential meeting, which is run annually by the Hadrianic Society. The fact that it is residential allows the participants to exchange views with the speakers in an informal atmosphere outside the programmed sessions.
The Roman Army School course will commence at 7pm on Saturday evening with dinner in the Penthouse Suite, where we will be joining the Hadrianic Society members attending their reunion. The Roman Army School course then overlaps with the Hadrianic Society Reunion Weekend. The combined group then attends the first lecture after dinner and two other sessions on Sunday morning. The Hadrianic Society reunion ends after Sunday lunch. The Army School then continues with sessions on Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening.
On Monday the Roman Army School continues with sessions in the mornings, afternoons and evenings. From Sunday onwards your fees include tea/coffee and biscuits during the morning and afternoon breaks. The exception is one afternoon when there will be free time to rest or explore locally (usually Monday afternoon). There is a social gathering with drinks and nibbles, (not included in your fees) on Tuesday evening instead of a lecture.
The course ends after lunch on Wednesday, packed lunches are available as an alternative for those who may need to leave early.
If you have any special requirements, e.g. special dietry requirements or the need for a ground floor room, please let us know when you send in the application form.

The Venue:
Collingwood College, South Road, Durham, County Durham, DH1 3LT Telephone: 0191 3345000.
The main building houses reception and the dining room on the ground floor. The Penthouse Suite (where our meetings will be held) is on the first floor and has lift access. The bar is in the basement and is accessible by stairs only, as there is no lift to this area - although there is an outside route which avoids the stairs. There is a lockable luggage room on the ground floor if you require it on the day you leave.
This building also contains the standard and en-suite rooms. Although on more than one floor, only the en-suite rooms are accessible by lifts. Standard rooms, other than ground floor, are accessible only by stairs. Morning and afternoon refreshments will be served in the Penthouse Suite. All other meals will be served in the dining room on the ground floor. The reception desk has a supply of plans of the building layout - please ask for one if you need a copy.
Travel :
The nearest railway station is in North Road, Durham - post code DH1 4RB and is just under 2 miles from Collingwood College.
Taxis park outside the station - the fare would be approximately £5. They would drop you at the main door and there is ramped access if required.
Buses go along South Road approximately every 15 minutes - Bus No6, run by Arriva - and go to and from the bus station just off the city centre. There is an uphill walk of about 300 yards to the college from the bus stop, so really the taxi is the best option. The bus stop into the city is down the hill from the college on the opposite side of the main road and there is a pedestrian crossing.
If travelling by car, you may drop off your luggage at Reception and then park up - some 100 yards away - then back via the steps to Reception, or take a slightly longer way round avoiding the steps.
